Restoril 15 mg is a specific dose of Restoril medicine. Other benzodiazepines like alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), etc. are also known to act as depressants of the central nervous system (CNS). However, Restoril 15 medicine’s effects are very similar to the other sedative-hypnotic drugs called ‘Z-drugs’. Familiar members of the Z-drugs family are Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone), and Sonata (zaleplon).
How Does Restoril 15 mg Works?
As we already know that Restoril 15 mg is a benzodiazepine, it acts as an agonist at the benzodiazepine receptors sites. These Restoril 15 mg capsules are thought to produce a pharmacological effect by facilitating GABA-mediated transmission in the CNS (Central Nervous System). Eventually, it helps the patient suffering from insomnia stay awake and active.
How is Restoril 15 mg Supplied?
In general Restoril capsules are supplied in various doses. But Restoril 15 mg capsule stands out from the rest as a maroon and pink capsule. The pink body has an imprint “FOR SLEEP” on it in red ink and a maroon cap side is imprinted with “RESTORIL 15 mg” twice in white ink.

How Long can Restoril Stay in the System?
After oral administration, Restoril (temazepam) is very well absorbed in an individual’s system from the gastrointestinal tract. It can take up to 45 to 60 minutes to feel the effects. However, taking a higher dose of Restoril may result in rapid absorption with the peak drug levels in the blood achieved at 2 to 3 hours.
The temazepam drug present in each Restoril 15 mg capsule has a half-life of 8 to 9 hours and is excreted with a half-life of approximately 2 hours. Within 24 hours of taking a dose of Restoril medicine almost 80% to 90% of the drug is recovered from an individual’s system. The drug is primarily excreted out via urine and feces.
Restoril 15 mg Dosage for Insomnia
Restoril (temazepam) is indicated for the symptomatic relief of transient and short-term insomnia found among adults. This can be characterized by difficulty in falling asleep, frequent awakening at night times, or early morning awakenings. Sleep disturbance can induce several physical and psychiatric disorders. Consequently, a decision to initiate symptomatic treatment of insomnia should only be done after the patient has been carefully and thoroughly evaluated by an authorized physician or doctor.
While the generally recommended adult dose is 15 mg of Restoril to be taken before bedtime. A Restoril 7.5 mg capsule may be sufficient for some patients, and others may even require a Restoril 30 mg capsule. In case of transient insomnia, a 7.5 mg dose of Restoril may be sufficient enough to improve sleep latency. But in elderly or debilitated patients, it is recommended that treatment be initiated with 7.5 mg of Restoril until individual responses and effects are not determined. Generally, Restoril 15 mg is indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia that should last for 7 to 10 days.
Precautions
Even before taking the medicines, you must know about their effects on the system. The Restoril 15 mg medications may not work in a similar way for everyone. It is restricted to certain groups of individuals and patients with specific health conditions.
Restoril And Pregnancy
Benzodiazepine medicines like Resoril 15 mg may cause fetal harm when administered by a pregnant woman. It is also observed in several cases that the transplacental distribution has resulted in neonatal CNS depression when Restoril medicine is used during the last weeks of pregnancy. The drug might also get passed to the child through breast milk. Hence, pregnant ladies and breastfeeding mothers should avoid using Restoril 15 mg capsules.
Other Restrictions
The safety and effectiveness of Restoril in children below the age of 18 years are yet to be established. So, children should stay away from Restoril. Elderly and debilitated patients are susceptible to dose-related adverse effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, or impaired coordination. Inappropriate, heavy sedation may result in serious accidental falls. Therefore, patients above the age of 65 should be indicated with the lowest possible dose of Restoril medicine.
Drug Interactions
Restoril may readily interact with fluvoxamine, itraconazole, ketoconazole, nefazodone, and many other medicines to induce various negative effects. Consequently, Restoril 15 mg medicine may produce additive CNS depressant effects when coadministered with alcohol, sedative antihistamines, anticonvulsants, or psychotropic medications. Compounds that inhibit certain hepatic enzymes tend to enhance the activity of benzodiazepines in an individual’s system.
Restoril 15 mg Abuse and Dependence
An individual can form a habit of using Restoril 15 mg when he/she is using a higher dose for a longer time. Although patients provided with a therapeutic dose for as few as 1-2 weeks can also show withdrawal symptoms after discontinuation. The risk of dependence is significantly high in patients with a history of alcoholism, or drug abuse. Interdose daytime anxiety and rebound anxiety may also increase the risk of dependency in patients using Restoril.
Severe withdrawal symptoms are usually associated with higher dosages and longer usage of Restoril 15 mg. Hence, abrupt discontinuation should be avoided and a gradual dosage tapering schedule must be followed. Consult with your concerned doctor or physician at regular intervals and follow their advice throughout the treatment period.
